I hope this letter finds everyone well. It has been a hot & steamy summer in NYC. I wanted to share some new and old music finds from the past few weeks, as well as upcoming events to keep an eye out for this month and September.
After returning from my travels this summer, I have been working for a friend and going through his personal record collection. While I’m not entirely sure what my job title is, I suppose it could be something like archivist or music librarian. I feel very privileged to have come across some records I had never heard before—though perhaps some of you have!
Anyway, I am happy to share my finds and hope they inspire everyone subscribed.
So, what have I been listening to? Everything. ;-)
Let’s start with the new and work our way to the past.
Milan W. - Leave Another Day [Stroom]
After a few years of silence, the Antwerp-based producer has announced his new album, Leave Another Day. His vocals will woo you to leave all your troubles behind.
Total Blue - Total Blue [Music From Memory]
Embracing chance, inviting the unknown, and guided by a spirit of sheer play and exploration, ‘Total Blue’ was driven by a desire to ‘touch the beyond’ in pursuit of an elusive vibe the three (os Angeles-based trio of Nicky Benedek, Alex Talan, and Anthony Calonico) had been chasing for years.
Marewrew - Uakap (Elijah Minnelli Remix) [Pingipung]
Tripped out dubby remix for the hypnotic folk music of the Ainu a cappella group Marewrew.
Skeet - Simple Reality [Efficient Space]
For lovers of Maximum Joy, A Certain Ratio & Young Marble Giant.
Metamatics - Transcendental Jazz Against The Void
This is a collection of some d&b, jazzzzzy tracks…
Izumi "Mimi" Kobayashi & Tokyo Riddim - Lazy Dub [Time Capsule]
Lounge around to this timeless riddim and get your last dose of l-a-z-y this summer. 🌞
Loidis - One Day [Incienso]
Six years after the release of the “A Parade, In The Place I Sit, The Floating World (& All Its Pleasures)” EP on anno Records, Brian Leeds, aka Huerco S., returns to the Loidis project with his debut album “One Day” on Incienso.
JuJu - Chapter Two: Nia [Strut]
A jazzy reissue from the 70s…
JuJu formed in San Francisco and moved to New York in July 1972. "We were avant-garde artists and revolutionary agents for change," explains bandleader James “Plunky” Branch. "We played venues like Slugs, the East, and Ornette Coleman’s loft on Prince Street; we also met and hung out with the greats, from Pharoah Sanders to John Gilmore.
Civilistjävel! - Brödföda
🍷 subtle accompanied with a nice chilled red, as a treat.
Polygonia & Shoal - Limping on Clouds [Harmony]
Cerebral
Crespi Drum Syndicate - Beats [Isla]
Crespi Drum Syndicate is a collaboration between long-time friends and musical cohorts, Pablo Arrangoiz (El Gusano/DJ Fitness) and Jonathan Trujillo (Jonny From Space). "Beats" developed from a desire to make music centered around rhythm and percussion, atonal sounds, inharmonic hooks, and a mutual agreement to refrain from melody and harmony as much as possible.
